Blackberry Enterprise Server – Activating your device

Activation

  • Before activation, ensure that the the plan for the phone includes BlackBerry data. This is typically a discrete plan offered by the carrier that is needed to allow BES connections. Normal data plans used for other phones will not work.

  • It is recommended that, prior to connecting the device to Exchange, the device should be wiped, even if it is "new in box". This process varies by OS version, but in general is done by selecting Settings,Options, Security Options, General Settings, Menu, Wipe Handheld. This process will take some time.

  • Once the activation code is obtained, it will need to be entered into the device. From this point on, make sure the device has a strong connection. Activation may fail if the BlackBerry does not have full signal strength.

  1. At the main screen, select Menu
  2. Select Setup
  3. Select Setup Wizard
  4. Select Email Setup
  5. Select I want to use a work email account with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, then click Next
  6. Under Has your BlackBerry Enterprise Server administrator provided you with an Enterprise Activation password? select Yes, then Next
  7. Enter the user's address as user@capris.com and use the activation code obtained earlier as the password. Activation Server Address should not be necessary.
  8. Select Menu, then Activate.

BlackBerry OS 4.5.x and earlier (BlackBerry Curve, 8x00 and older)

  1. At the main screen select Settings
  2. In the Settings screen select Options
  3. In the Options list select Advanced Options
  4. In the Advanced Options list select Enterprise Activation
  5. In the Enterprise Activation screen enter the Exchange email address as user@capris.com and enter the Activation Code in the Password field.
  6. Select Menu, then Activate.

  • Enterprise activation should take about 10 minutes, though this can vary wildly depending on the size of the mail store and signal strength. During the process, the user will receive a message in their Exchange Inbox from network entitled RIM_xxxxxxxxxxxxx. This message is part of the activation process and must be left in the Inbox until the process has completed. If this message appears and activation doesn't complete successfully, the email address or other settings were likely entered improperly.

  • Once registered, there will be many lines of information about the status of synchronization. Once the process finishes, you may see the message "Activation Successful". At this point, you are ready to use your handheld with Exchange server.

  • In the BlackBerry 6 operating system, a reboot may be required after activation.
